Stanford and Harvard alumna Dr. Kathleen Welsh is one of the top providers of BOTOX in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has performed more than 50,000 treatments in the past fifteen years of cosmetic dermatology practice. Her colleague Dr. Andrea Hui Austin has also received years of extensive training in cosmetic dermatology and is a national educator in neuromodulator treatments. Together with their skilled staff of registered nurses, and Garrett Forrest, PA-C, Dr. Welsh and Dr. Hui Austin perform more than 5,000 BOTOX treatments per year. Dr. Welsh has personally trained all of the registered nurses on her staff that inject BOTOX and each of these practitioners is skilled at determining the proper placement and volume of BOTOX to help you achieve your desired results. The results are natural and subtle – no one will ask you if you just had BOTOX, but they may notice that you look rested and refreshed.

What is BOTOX?

BOTOX is an FDA-approved injectable wrinkle relaxer used to safely smooth lines and wrinkles on the face. BOTOX  works by relaxing the over-used muscles underneath the skin to minimize dynamic wrinkles like "Crow's feet" in the corners of the eye, frown lines (also known as “11’s”), forehead furrows, smiles lines, and more. The result is an overall softer and more youthful appearance. In addition, BOTOX can also be used to treat severe headaches, excessive perspiration, and temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. To learn more about BOTOX, please schedule a cosmetic consultation with one of our San Francisco board-certified dermatologists, our PA, or one of our registered nurses.

Who should get BOTOX?

Millions of patients worldwide have already been treated with BOTOX, making it the #1 selling product of its kind in the world. If you are unhappy with the wrinkles around your eyes and forehead, you may be a candidate for BOTOX. It not only provides temporary relief from moderate to severe lines and creases, like Crow's feet, frown lines, smile lines, and forehead furrows but can also be used to prevent new wrinkles from forming. If you are looking for a quick, effective, and nonsurgical anti-aging treatment, BOTOX may be the perfect treatment for you.

BOTOX treatments are very simple when performed by one of our highly skilled injectors. A topical numbing cream will first be applied to the injection site. Then, using a very fine needle, one of the providers injects the BOTOX into the treatment area. Most patients find the injections to be painless and, with the topical numbing, you may not feel anything at all! Our skilled medical professionals determine the exact amount of BOTOX that you will need and the ideal placement for individualized and best results. After your BOTOX treatment is complete, you can almost immediately go back to your daily routine.

After a BOTOX treatment, patients can expect some minor swelling and redness at the injection sites. This goes away quickly and is generally not noticeable within about an hour after the treatment. The results following a BOTOX treatment are not immediate. Typically it takes about seven to fourteen days for patients to see their smoother, softer complexion begin to appear. At our dermatology office, our patients love their results so much, they come back every three to four months so that they can maintain their gorgeous results.

Can BOTOX be paired with other cosmetic treatments?
BOTOX treatments pair well with additional noninvasive services at Bay Area Cosmetic Dermatology for patients who wish to reduce signs of aging. If you experience more pronounced and extensive facial wrinkles and lines, our experts may recommend adding a filler for maximum outcomes. To further maximize your youthful radiant appearance, we can perform additional complementary treatments, such as facials or microneedling with PRP.

Are there comparable aesthetic injections?
BOTOX is a specific type of wrinkle relaxer that competes within a market of other effective brands, such as Jeuveau®, Dysport®, and XEOMIN®. These wrinkle relaxer treatments utilize botulinum toxin type A; however, each one is created individually to target specific issues.

Is there a variation among fillers and wrinkle reducers?
While wrinkle relaxers, such as BOTOX, are provided to decrease facial lines by temporarily blocking your muscle movements, dermal fillers are a distinct category of cosmetic formulations that enhance volume in the face. Fillers are intended to volumize gaunt-looking features and fill in static wrinkles. Our team can ascertain whether you may benefit from a filler (such as Restylane® or JUVÉDERM®) to complement your BOTOX outcomes.
