About Laser Tattoo Removal
Old or unwanted tattoos don't have to be permanent anymore. Advanced laser technology, such as the Syneron Candela PicoWay system used at Bay Area Cosmetic Dermatology in San Francisco, extracts tattoo ink from the from the face and body, gradually fading the tattoo over a series of treatments. Depending on the size and colors used in the tattoo, the procedure process may vary, but it is generally a quick, safe procedure that does not produce scarring. If you have been considering tattoo removal, schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists, our physician’s assistant, or one of our registered nurses to learn more about the treatment.

What to Expect
Prior to your treatment one of our medical professionals will test the laser on a small spot of the tattoo. We do this to see how your specific tattoo reacts to the laser and determine the best settings to use. If we determine that the laser will be effective on your tattoo, we will schedule a full treatment. Prior to your treatment a registered nurse or medical assistant will clean the area of skin where the tattoo is located. The laser will then pass over the surface of the tattoo with a pulsed light. Depending on the size and color of your tattoo you may have a very short treatment time or an extended length of time to cover the area. Most patients feel mild discomfort or stinging and a topical anesthetic cream may be applied to reduce the pain. Once the laser treatment is over, an ointment is applied to the skin with a bandage to keep it protected. Please note that this process may need to be repeated multiple times to be effective.
Other Considerations
When multiple treatments are required (typically four to fifteen), they will be scheduled four to eight weeks apart. The visibility of the tattoo will decrease with each laser treatment session. Many patients experience some swelling, redness, and sensitivity to the area treated. You may feel a sunburnt or itching sensation. Skin crusting is also a common side effect. Patients should be very careful not to damage the area by scratching or picking the treated skin.
