Tranexamic Acid to Prevent and Treat Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation
6/8/2021
Dr. Austin and Dr. Welsh, along with medical student (and previous BACD medical assistant!) Aleksandra Lindgren have published a landmark article in Journal of Drugs in Dermatology (JDD) . Their work highlights the use of tranexamic acid to treat post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
WHAT IS PIH?
Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) can be a troublesome result of conditions such as acne, melasma, and burns. It can also be a complication of procedures such as lasers, peels, microneedling, or even injections. PIH can negatively impact the quality of life and is sometimes devastating to a patient.
At Bay Area Cosmetic Dermatology, we believe PIH can always resolve with the right approach. For the patients in this study, oral medication tranexamic acid was prescribed and successfully healed their PIH to achieve beautiful, glowing skin! Our providers dedicate themselves to providing you with cutting-edge prescription-grade skin care, and oral medications when needed.
Drs. Austin and Welsh have been actively publishing for years. Dr. Austin is proud to have 28 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and Dr. Welsh has 13 and counting, with more publications pending! They believe in providing education in written form and giving lectures nationwide and worldwide. Dr. Austin also offers hands-on injectables and surgical training for other board-certified dermatologists and dermatology residents.
