Dr. Kathleen Welsh is the founder of Bay Area Cosmetic Dermatology and has been practicing cosmetic dermatology for over 25 years. She is a double board-certified physician in Internal Medicine and Dermatology and was one of the first dermatologists in San Francisco to use Botox and injectable fillers for cosmetic use. She is a highly acclaimed doctor receiving multiple awards for her expertise and frequently lectures at national dermatology meetings and courses. Dr. Welsh’s philosophy is to treat each patient as an individual to deliver natural, state of the art treatments that help them look like themselves - but better. She prides herself on having the largest laser and cosmetic center in the Bay Area able to satisfy each patient’s unique needs. She firmly believes that “Everyone can have better skin” and has seen the evidence of medical grade products delivering on this promise time and time again.
Dr. Welsh graduated from UC Berkeley with highest honors and received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. Following medical school, she completed an internal medicine residency at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine. She completed her residency in dermatology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Welsh is passionate about giving back and mentors many young pre-professional students.
Prior to establishing her private practice, Bay Area Cosmetic Dermatology, in 2000, Dr. Welsh served as the director of cosmetic dermatology and as the chief of dermatology for The Permanente Medical Group’s Kaiser Foundation Health Plan in San Francisco. During that time she established and directed The Permanente Cosmetic Dermatology program, which is now used as a model for similar programs nationwide. Dr. Welsh has been selected as a Top Doctor by Castle Connolly every year since 2014 and named as one of the “Top 10 Dermatologists West” by Aesthetic Everything; the first social network for aesthetic professionals. She received the president’s award from the American Academy of Dermatology for service to her specialty in 2020.
Dr. Welsh lives in San Francisco with her husband, who is a retired emergency physician and non-profit board president. She grew up in Northern California and has always led an active lifestyle. She enjoys being in nature, running in Golden Gate Park, skiing, and kiteboarding. Dr. Welsh is active in the TIBA Foundation, a non-profit organization that supplies quality healthcare to people living in rural Kenya. She is also an ardent supporter of She Can, a non-profit organization that provides college education for women in Rwanda, Guatemala, Cambodia, and Liberia. She is a major contributor to Walk SF, Bay Area Women’s and Children’s Center in the Tenderloin, Jamestown community in SF, Oakland lacrosse Club, and many other organizations. Welsh has completed three Skin Cancer Take a Hikes, globally helping to raise two million dollars with her colleagues to support skin cancer screenings and shade structures. She has also been a longtime volunteer at Clinic By the Bay, a free clinic in the Outer Mission of San Francisco.
Dr. Welsh is the consummate skin care professional. She is thorough and inquisitive, extremely knowledgeable and informative. Her genuine concern for her patients is clear; and it is the hallmark of her practice. She is as lovely as she is brilliant.
