Clearing the Canvas, treatment for Melasma in Pacific Heights, San Francisco*

Our Location

This lovely patient suffered from melasma and sun damage for many years and had consulted several dermatologists before coming to Dr. Austin for an opinion. Often, melasma is "simply" treated with hydroquinone or the wrong lasers, resulting in worsening of melasma, as in her case. Dr. Austin firmly believes melasma must be in remission first, before treating sun spots. Typically we want to first "clear the canvas" of melasma with vascular laser, providing a safe foundation for the second round of pigment lasers to remove brown spots. Chemical peels were also used to accelerate results and provide beautiful, smooth skin. "In my experience, education and prescription skincare are just as important as procedures. The patient needs to understand the science behind their condition, as well as how to best avoid melasma triggers. Asian/skin of color skin types require the utmost knowledge and care when deciding which procedures are safest and most effective. It is an honor to help this patient achieve beautiful skin!" - Dr. Austin
