About LED Light Treatments
Have you tried LED light treatments at Bay Area Cosmetic Dermatology for your facial skin? There are many ways to tighten your skin and improve its tone and texture, such as non-ablative laser treatments, intense pulsed light (IPL), micro-focused ultrasound, radiofrequency energy, or microneedling. All of these mentioned techniques work below the skin's surface on the dermal level, usually without injuring the outer layers of the skin. Most of these treatments rely on some degree of heat damage to the deeper skin layers for their rejuvenating effects. For instance, Ulthera uses ultrasound energy to heat collagen deep in the dermis, causing the strands to contract and tighten the skin's surface. It causes some pain, but recovery time is less than a day.
Our aesthetics team offers a technique called light-emitting diode (LED) photo modulation that doesn't heat or damage deep skin layers. LED light treatments involve the use of a lower level of light to treat sun-damaged skin. It has less dramatic outcomes compared to many other rejuvenation approaches, but it's comfortable and requires no recovery time. We can assess your skin at our San Francisco, CA office to see how you may benefit from LED light treatments.
"I went to Bay Area Dermatology because a few of the girls in my office recommend it. I had developed a really bad case of melasma on my cheeks and upper lip. When I made an appointment they had asked me if I had a preference as to who I wanted to see. I told the receptionist that I had Asian skin so if I could get someone that is familiar with treating common Asian skin issues that would be fantastic. I was scheduled an appointment with Dr. Hui.At my first meet with Dr. Hui she confirmed that I did indeed have melasma and that my next step was to start getting chemical peels 4-6 weeks apart. Wow. Holy smokes! So far I've received 3 chemical peels and the melasma is almost gone. It's at the point where I am able to cover it up with just foundation. Yippee! At my most recent appointment I received my first laser treatment with Mary. I had a 1pm appointment and was seen quickly to start the numbing process. I am one of those people that benifit from the extra time with the numbing cream so I appreciate that the ladies got me started immediately. I was so numb that I barely felt a thing. Definitely one of the easiest laser procedures I have ever done."- J.C. / Yelp / Dec 02, 2017
"I've been treated with every rosecea treatment existing and evolving for a period of over thirty years. Anyone with this condition knows how persistent and difficult it can be to treat so I did a yelp search using the key word "rosacea" in hopes of finding yet another approach to managing - yelp.com/biz/andrea-hui-…. My search showed Dr. Andrea Hui Huston as having the highest number of positive reviews for rosacea treatment so that is why I chose her and why I am now writing this review. After only a few months of treatment, the changes in my skin have been remarkable. Not only has the red hue of my face diminished but the texture, smoothness and pore size has improved quite noticeably. In my case, Dr. Austin uses a combination of applications including a variety of topicals. I've always been distrustful of ointments and such that supposedly improve rosacea because they've never worked in the past but for me, these have been incredibly effective. The severity of flushing I've always had a problem with has reduced dramatically also which I believe in part is the result of an oral medication she prescribed. I am beyond pleased with the effectiveness of treatment I've received from Dr. Hui Austin. It's my hope that this review may help others find remedy to their problematic dermatological concerns."- J.B. / Yelp / Jan 02, 2019
"Dr. Austin is the. best. I was really struggling with dark under eye circles and cystic acne on my cheeks. Both are gone and I couldn't be happier. Before it would take 20mins every morning to do my makeup - layers of primer, foundation, concealer. Now my skin is so clear that a bit of blush, gloss and some concealer is all I need. I've always been hesitant with cosmetic procedures and Dr. Austin and her staff have been amazing. I've never felt pressured to try or buy anything. tbh she's discouraged me more than once from trying unnecessary treatments. Dr Austin listens and recommends small natural looking changes."- N.G. / Yelp / Dec 29, 2018
"Wow. Time and Time again Dr. Austin has helped me feel more and more beautiful. Her delicate approach with filler and dysport revamps my youth and confidence. I will never stray from her incredible craft. 100% sold."- R.L. / Yelp / Dec 19, 2018
"I'm 46 and have been planning on visiting a dermatologist for a few years to have an increasing number of broken veins and milia sorted. Dr Hui was recommended by a friend and I finally made time for an appointment. What a revelation. It transpired I have rosacea, not broken veins, and a combination of a monthly tablet and daily cream have basically cleared it up (this has also had the side benefit of reducing irritation I had in my eyes which is also caused by rosacea, so double win). I had eczema on my face in my 20's and have always been very wary of new skincare regimes after finding a handful of over the counter creams that didn't aggravate it. Dr Hui prescribed and provided samples of a proposed regime which within days cleared up some inflammations and made my skin look 10X better. I've now had 2x laser for light resurfacing and to sort a few veins that became visible when the rosacea cleared. It requires a few days working from home/weekend (I look a bit like a chipmunk for 4 days), but the impact on my skin texture and tone is incredible. I've dropped all but a touch of concealer (vs full foundation) and there is a noticeable improvement in small wrinkles as well. All in all, I wish I'd done this 10 years earlier!! Dr Hui has a fabulous manner, is super efficient, and works with your schedule in terms of treatments/what you can incorporate into your working life. I cannot recommend her too highly."- S.C. / Yelp / Dec 10, 2018
LED photo modulation appears to work best on skin with mild to moderate sun damage, large pores, wrinkles, and poor skin texture and quality. Ideal candidates may also combine these light treatments with other rejuvenation techniques for even better results. It is also safe for all skin types.
What to Expect
Before your treatment, your face will be cleaned and makeup will be removed. Then, you will sit in front of LED panels with your eyes shielded while a bright light flashes onto your face for about 20 minutes. You should have no discomfort, redness, or a sensation of heat in the skin afterward. You can return to normal activities right away. Typically, you start with a series of treatments twice a week for 4 – 6 weeks. To maintain results, you may need 3 – 4 follow-up sessions per year. LED light treatments may also improve acne and reduce facial redness from rosacea or sun damage.
In two clinical trials involving a total of 183 patients, LED photo modulation has produced improvements in skin texture, skin discoloration, redness, and fine lines around the eyes in most patients. A study in the journal Lasers in Surgery and Medicine followed 90 patients with mild to moderate photoaging for a year after two months of twice-weekly treatments. Results were evaluated with digital photographs, skin surface measurements, and skin biopsies.
The researchers reported some improvement in 90% of the participants. Results were best in the fourth month after the treatment. By month 12, there was some decline, although the skin's condition was still better than before treatment. All biopsies showed improved collagen production.
