Efudex (florouracil) is an anti-metabolite medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat cancerous or pre-cancerous lesions and spots on the skin. Efudex is a prescription topical cream that is applied to the affected area and can be used as an effective alternative to chemotherapy drugs because of its ease of use and accessibility. When applied, the cream interferes with the metabolic and cell regeneration process of cancerous or pre-cancerous cells, interrupting their reproduction rate and attempting to eliminate the mutated cells. Efudex can effectively stop the cell reproduction and halt the cancer from spreading, treating a number of different conditions, such as actinic keratosis and basal cell cancer of the skin. The board-certified dermatologists and skin care professionals at Bay Area Cosmetic Dermatology can help San Francisco area patients diagnose and treat skin conditions like actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma with prescription Efudex.
"I went to Bay Area Dermatology because a few of the girls in my office recommend it. I had developed a really bad case of melasma on my cheeks and upper lip. When I made an appointment they had asked me if I had a preference as to who I wanted to see. I told the receptionist that I had Asian skin so if I could get someone that is familiar with treating common Asian skin issues that would be fantastic. I was scheduled an appointment with Dr. Hui.At my first meet with Dr. Hui she confirmed that I did indeed have melasma and that my next step was to start getting chemical peels 4-6 weeks apart. Wow. Holy smokes! So far I've received 3 chemical peels and the melasma is almost gone. It's at the point where I am able to cover it up with just foundation. Yippee! At my most recent appointment I received my first laser treatment with Mary. I had a 1pm appointment and was seen quickly to start the numbing process. I am one of those people that benifit from the extra time with the numbing cream so I appreciate that the ladies got me started immediately. I was so numb that I barely felt a thing. Definitely one of the easiest laser procedures I have ever done."- J.C. / Yelp / Dec 01, 2017
"Dr. Welsh and her staff are the very best! I have been coming here for many years and am always more than happy with the results of their services. Dr. Welsh is very experienced, highly skilled and does absolutely beautiful work. I don't know what I'd do without her!"- L.H. / Yelp / Jul 19, 2019
"I love Dr. Welsh. I love Dr. Austin."- M.C. / Facebook / Jun 07, 2019
"Dr. Austin is a miracle worker! When I came to her, I was desperate to fix my acne, and I did not even think it would be possible to be a no makeup girl again... Fast forward like 6 months and Dr. Austin proved me wrong!! Not only did pimples stop (even those deeeep boys!), but then she began process of resurfacing my skin to get rid of scarring and leftover redness. I cannot believe how refined the texture of my skin is now!!!! Literally it's like I got a skin transplant, and keeps getting progressively better the longer I stick with our regimen (have been seeing her for years now!). After seeing how much Dr. Austin was helping my acne, I decided to switch to her for all my injectable needs too... holy crap. I've been reverse aging ever since !!!!!!!!!!!! She gets max results but is MASTER at keeping it just natural enough Dr. Austin always takes the time to understand the look I want, and I feel like a goddess every damn time I leave her office!!"- T.B. / Yelp / Jun 03, 2019
"Dr. Hui Austin is amazing!! She has honestly changed my life. I have been struggling with melasma for the last five years and have tried so many different treatments spending thousands of dollars with minimal results (cosmelan peel, chemical peels, acupuncture, etc.) After our first initial consultation I felt like I had hope with this condition that had consumed me for years. Her confidence in her work and the results she expects to see I believe is the kind of confidence every doctor should instill in their patients. She came up with a skin care plan for me that included at home care and in office treatments and the results have been life changing. I now get compliments on my skin! Not only has it cleared up my melasma but no more blemishes, less fine lines and shrunken pores are all added bonuses with my skin care regimen. If you have melasma you know how debilitating it can be and Dr. Austin is so incredibly knowledgable on the subject and takes the time to explain how each treatment works while making you feel at complete ease. I can't say enough how thankful I am that I found her and wish all my doctors had the kind of dedication Dr. Austin has to both her work and patients. I always do my homework before having anyone near my skin (I'm talking hours in the blackhole of reading reviews) and after having read other people's success with melasma with Dr. Austin I decided to book a consultation. Six months later I am so happy I did and wanted to return that favor with my own review for any others out there that might be struggling with melasma - there is hope!!!"- C.D. / Yelp / May 20, 2019
Efudex is most commonly used to treat two skin conditions:
- Actinic Keratosis: actinic keratosis is a patch of scaly skin that forms commonly on the face, hands, arms, and head due to overexposure of ultra violet (UV) rays. This condition usually takes years to develop and can be diagnosed by examining the abnormal patch of skin. Actinic keratosis does not necessarily equate with cancer, however it can lead to skin cancer over time if it is not properly treated or prevented. Efudex is used to treat actinic keratosis and can be a successful cancer prevention method. It is important to consult with one of our dermatologists to determine if this method might be right for you.
- Basal Cell Carcinoma: basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that is formed by excessive exposure to the sun and artificial UV lights. The cancerous region appears as a transparent legion on the skin, typically in regions that receive the most sun exposure, like the face and neck. This kind of carcinoma begins in the basal cells, the type of cells within the skin that are responsible for the reproduction process of new cells. When cancerous cells invade, Efudex can be effective in interrupting this regeneration process, potentially leading to the destruction of the cancerous cells. Our skilled dermatologists are highly-equipped to assess your needs and help decide if this is the proper treatment method for you.
What to Expect
Patients may apply Efudex/fluorouracil cream themselves, directly on the legion or cancerous area of the skin. Depending on the severity of the condition, Efudex may be applied regularly or periodically over different periods of time. The cream should be applied using fingertips (metal applicators should be avoided) and hands should be washed after coming into contact with the cream. One of our skilled dermatologist will determine the patient's dosage and treatment schedule depending on their condition and the level of skin damage. After the patient has applied the cream for the prescribed amount of time, one of our dermatologists will determine if the cream may be discontinued via emailed photo of the treatment area or in person office visit.
The most common reactions to Efudex treatment include: itching, irritation, burning, swelling, or other discomfort around the treated area. Treated lesions may become red, blister, and/or scab. Not to worry, however, this is a normal side effect and a sign that the treatment is working to destroy precancerous and cancerous cells. Usually, these symptoms will subside and heal after the entire treatment process is complete. Patients should avoid taking aspirin while using Efudex and it should not be used on women who are or may become pregnant to avoid serious complications. Before using Efudex please talk to your doctor about any current medications and review your medical history. Patients should report any side effects or concerns while using Efudex.
