WHAT IS HYPERHIDROSIS?
Sweating is a common and natural part of life. However, in some instances, the sweat glands in your underarms can become overactive and produce excessive perspiration that is out of the ordinary. Such a condition is referred to as hyperhidrosis and can lead to discomfort, stained clothes, and embarrassing odor. If you suffer from this condition, we can help you here at Bay Area Cosmetic Dermatology in San Francisco.
What is miraDry?
miraDry is a treatment method approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to isolate and reduce the number of sweat and odor glands, as well as hair follicles, in the underarm region. The body contains approximately two million sweat glands, but only about 2% are found in the underarm area. This procedure is safe since the body can still produce the necessary amount of sweat for normal bodily function without the underarm sweat glands. miraDry is a permanent, minimally-invasive procedure that allows patients to move forward with their lives with less sweat and less stress.
"I went to Bay Area Dermatology because a few of the girls in my office recommend it. I had developed a really bad case of melasma on my cheeks and upper lip. When I made an appointment they had asked me if I had a preference as to who I wanted to see. I told the receptionist that I had Asian skin so if I could get someone that is familiar with treating common Asian skin issues that would be fantastic. I was scheduled an appointment with Dr. Hui.At my first meet with Dr. Hui she confirmed that I did indeed have melasma and that my next step was to start getting chemical peels 4-6 weeks apart. Wow. Holy smokes! So far I've received 3 chemical peels and the melasma is almost gone. It's at the point where I am able to cover it up with just foundation. Yippee! At my most recent appointment I received my first laser treatment with Mary. I had a 1pm appointment and was seen quickly to start the numbing process. I am one of those people that benifit from the extra time with the numbing cream so I appreciate that the ladies got me started immediately. I was so numb that I barely felt a thing. Definitely one of the easiest laser procedures I have ever done."- J.C. / Yelp / Dec 02, 2017
"I needed a same day appointment as I had an emergency. These guys came thru with flying colors. Very satisfied with their service. Totally customer service oriented, unlike a lot of other places I have patronized in this category. I will return."- J.M. / Yelp / Nov 14, 2017
"Dr. Andrea Hui is a very well trained surgeon and cosmetic dermatologist. She provides excellent care and is very committed to her patients. I would recommend her to all my friends and family."- M.L. / Yelp / Oct 24, 2017
"This review is about Dr Hui- the only person I trust with my face. She is kind and generous with her time, and has an eye for detail. She patiently listened to all my concerns before the procedure and I always leave her office not just looking my best but feeling my best too! Thank you Dr Hui. Cheers, Hillel-"- H.S. / Yelp / Oct 20, 2017
"Dr Hui is not only an amazing dermatologist but an amazing person as well! I trust her completely and know I'm in good hands whether she's helping me clear up some eczema or filling my lips!"- K.K. / Yelp / Oct 19, 2017
miraDry can help anyone who wants to control the sweat and odor from their underarms. miraDry is a great solution if you:
- Have consistent problems with excessive underarm sweat
- Get frequent stains in the underarm area of your shirts
- Want to avoid the harsh chemicals and toxins in deodorant
- Are embarrassed by the odor caused by your armpits
- Want to feel cleaner and fresher
- Stain clothes or get wet marks from underarm sweat
What to Expect
Prior to the miraDry procedure, one of our registered nurses will administer lidocaine injections to numb the underarm area. Next, the nurse will pass the miraDry handpiece over the skin. The handpiece uses light suction to bring the sweat glands closer to the surface of the skin. The miraWave™ heated energy works on the sweat and odor glands while the surface of your skin is kept cool by the miraDry device. Most treatments take about one hour with the patient relaxed and comfortable throughout the process.
After the treatment, the underarm area may have temporary swelling, soreness, numbness, or tingling for a few days to a few weeks, but most patients have an immediate reduction in underarm sweat after the treatment. Once they are destroyed, sweat glands do not come back, so patients enjoy long-lasting results. To get your best results, one to three treatments may be recommended, spaced about three to six months apart. You can resume normal activities right after your treatment, but it is best to avoid strenuous activity, like exercise, for a few days.
An alternative option to miraDry is underarm injections of a neuromodulator, such as Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin. These neuromodulators are administered to overactive sweat glands to slow their sweat production and keep you dry and comfortable. Although the results are temporary, neuromodulators are an excellent option for men and women in search of a quick, straightforward solution to excessive sweating.
